It was a beautiful Mother’s Day day inside and out.

  • The Shema (Still)
  • Forever (Tomlin)
    • We began this with the band intro vamping on the “G” to “Gsus”
    • The Leader spontaneously singing the verses from Psalm 136:1-4
    • The People singing Tomlin’s melody “His love endures forever”
    • After about 45 seconds of this, we launch the song
  • Our God
  • Draw Me Close
  • Oh Taste and See
  • Mighty to Save
    • We featured the bridge “shine your light and let the whole world see…” as a benediction and encouragement to represent Christ in the world.

May 1 Worship Set List

This post is part of the Worship Community Sunday set lists.

This weekend I was a guest guitarist/singer under the leadership of Jennifer Martin at Redeemer Church/Nashville. It’s refreshing to support a leader and not be the leader, not to mention a much lighter workload! As every worship leader knows, planning a worship set, communicating with the team and preparing music is a lot of work.

We had a simple set-up with piano, perc, and me on guitar. Also on the team were 2 pre-teens – one on guitar/vox and one featured vocalist. They sounded great and we had a lot of fun. Below is the set list. Although it may seem like a lot of titles, this is a liturgical service. It goes by pretty fast. The entire service is about 75 minutes.

  • Alleluia Alleluia (Beethoven)
  • Sing For Joy (Lamont Heibert)
  • Psalm 16:Keep Me Safe Oh God (John Foley Hoffert, Martin)
  • Around The Throne (Julie Meyer)
  • It Is Well (Hymn: Spafford, Bliss)
  • The Risen Christ (Phil Maderia, Keith Getty) (Great song!)
  • Our Father (Jill Phillips, Andy Gullahorn) (Great song!)
  • Faithful Men (Twilla Paris)
  • Lamb of God (Jewitt, Hardy, Lefevre)
  • Bread of Life
  • Blessed Be Your Name (Redmon)

We had a fabulous Resurrection Sunday celebration at Christ Community Church in McMinnville, TN. Great community of folks. The place was packed, not only with people, but also the joy and love of Jesus. Paul Roberts is a great pastor and teacher.

Worship Set April 10 2011

This Sunday I was guest worship leader at a new church plant in Hendersonville TN called Holy Family.

They meet in a beautiful chapel and we used no amplification. That’s right, no mikes, no PA – all natural sound. We did a contemporary/blended liturgy and many of these were new songs for the congregation. It was a sweet time.  In fact you can read their blog post “Prayer Answered” here.

My Sunday Worship Research Project: Report #1

When I’m not leading worship somewhere, I’ve been visiting different churches as a research project. It’s a “blank slate” approach to learn by observation. Over the last few months I’ve visited over a dozen churches with a wide range of styles, size, denomination, and approach to worship.

What does the average person experience among different communities in the body of Christ? The range of diversity has been enlightening and fascinating.

Some take-a-ways worth noting.

1. Know Your Niche

There’s more than one way to skin a cat. There are multiple and very divergent ways to engage people in relevant, meaningful worship. The better churches did not seem to be aspiring to be something they could not be. They understood their niche, their unique identity, and led worship in a way that was meaningful to their context.

The age and personality of the leaders, combined with the cultural history and vision of the church – are huge variables  that shape the worship personality of a community.

2. Hospitality Matters

It really is the little things that make the biggest difference. One church stood out because they had a culture of welcoming strangers and making them feel at home. Another church I thought was really “on top of it” , surprisingly they never followed up on our visitor card, even though outreach and growth seemed very important to them. Yet another church felt like an exclusive country club that was not so interested in newcomers.

3. Did we experience the presence of God?

Now here’s a novel idea, did we actually experience the presence of God? I would say yes in almost every context, but in differing measures. It seems that our methods of worship are not the most important thing. Surprise!

It has become apparent to me we can say and do all the right things and still just be going through the motions. Conversely, we can have amped up musical or emotional experiences and still not be worshiping in spirit and truth.

The response of the heart is what matters most.

Only God can truly evaluate the state of one’s heart, or of the gathered hearts of the people. However, I would submit that the average observer can discern whether folks seem to be bored or engaged, timid or participating , passive or passionate, inhibited or heartfelt. This will look and sound very differently depending on context, but you can still spiritually discern it.

Worship Set March 27

This post is for the Worship Community Sunday Setlists blog for Christ Community Church / McMinnville TN.

The weather was cold and gray, but our gathering warm and energetic. These songs flowed well musically and conceptually. It’s been a while since we sang Mighty To Save and it was refreshing today. “Take me as you find me, all my fears and failures” – love that lyric! The message theme was grace.

Psalm 24 Scripture reading

Lift Up Your Heads (Rob Still) D

Oh Taste and See (Johnson) D

Your Grace is Enough (Maher) G

Mighty To Save (Hillsongs) G

We Interrupt Our Regularly Scheduled Programing

This post is for worship leaders and planners.

Imagine this … it’s Friday, the weekend services are planned, the music charts and arrangements ready, the media slides prepared. You can relax and chill.

But then, disaster strikes. No, not the kind that inconveniences you , like the drummer cancels or your hard drive crashes. Its a major tragedy, a death, a catastrophic local or world calamity, something of such magnitude that you would be remiss to ignore it. Should this event change your worship plan? My answer – maybe, it depends.

When is it right to change plans?

Deciding to do anything “off plan” is going to be a judgment call requiring wisdom and discernment. This past weekend, for example, I had originally planned on making “Happy Day” the first song. As I watched the images of the Japan earthquake, a happy-clappy call to worship seemed a ludicrous opener. The weight and impact of the world situation called for something more focused on declaring God’s sovereignty over natural events.

My ministry philosophy is to facilitate wholehearted worship, not escapist put-on-a-happy-face worship. There are times when we need to be pastorally sensitive to the mindset of our people and honestly address the tragedies at hand. However,  that does not mean we constantly shift here and there, always letting the news change our plans. Many times the best response is to just stay the course. Let wisdom and some common sense rule.

What to say? The Psalms are a good model.

The Psalms of lament (13, 51, 69, 38, 41, 71, 88 and others) give us structure and language when we don’t know what to say.

  1. First, we call on the Lord.
  2. We bring him the issue with frank honesty.
  3. We ask for his help in specific ways.
  4. We conclude by expressing hope, trust and confidence in His ability and desire to respond.

David’s songs were testimonies of his confidence in God.  Their message in essence, life is hard, but God is good.

In worship, we give people language to express truth.

So we substituted “God of Wonders”, I felt the lyrics “Lord of all creation, of water earth and sky ..” helped give us words to focus on God’s sovereignty over nature. We also subbed in “Your Love Never Fails” because it expresses confidence in God’s love “You make all things work together for my good”

The purpose of this blog is to encourage wholehearted worship worldwide.

What about you? Have you changed your worship plan because of some significant event? I’d love to see your comments or thoughts on this.
